September 17, 2008 on 10:22 am | In cool colors, custom header, fixed width, gray, header image, light, two columns, white | No comments

screen shot of UnlimitedUnlimited is a 2-column fixed width theme, with the option of a custom header image, by WP Theme Land. Unlimited is presented straight out of the box. The header image can be changed for an image of your choice, or left as is.

Unlimited strikes us (it’s the header image – looks like Aloe vera to us) that it could be used by astrologers, florists, electricians, environmentalists, electronics service, scientists, ornithologists, hunters, fishers, botanists, poets, travel guides … choose ‘unlimited’ from Themeleon – our ‘no boundaries’ theme shifter.

Identity

September 11, 2008 on 9:38 am | In brown, cream, fixed width, gray, three columns | No comments

screen shot of IdentityIdentity is a dark colored theme fully validated for maximum readability and designed by Jai Nischal Vermaand. The charcoal-y and soft beige colors complement the cream text background. Soft and easy on the eye, while not sacrificing any readability.

Identity has a faint air of Victorian about it – Darjeeling tea, name cards, and battenburg lace – we can see this theme being used by book binders, museums, historians, cartographers, military, memorabilia collectors … choose ‘identity’ from Themeleon – our ‘lemon and a dash of sugar’ theme shifter.

12 Apostles

September 6, 2008 on 8:03 am | In black, dark, fixed width, gray, header image, simple, two columns, white | No comments

screen shot of 12 Apostles12 Apostles, by Ronan Menton uses a picture taken at the 12 Apostles, South West from Melbourne, Australia, along the Great Ocean Road. Ronan notes that, in his opinion, it’s one of the most spectacular sights in Australia.

A rather moody and atmospheric theme, 12 Apostles seems to lend itself to web sites for outdoor sports people, environmentalists, photographers, scientists, counselors, therapists, geologists, geographers, travelers … choose ‘12apostles’ from Themeleon – our outback theme shifter.

Internet Music

September 5, 2008 on 6:48 am | In fixed width, gray, red, three columns, two columns, warm colors, white | No comments

screen shot of Internet MusicInternet Music is designed by Luka Cvrk, and WordPressed by Ericulous from a style sheet by David Herreman. Another great WordPress collaboration.

We like the rust-red and grays colour combination, set off with the dash of cornflower blue. Makes us think of red cattle – paprika, and charcoal – hey – this is more about barbecue than music. You decide how you’ll use this theme. Of course the subheader can be customized – unless you have a special thing for Latin-ish. Well, no, we didn’t think so either.

screen shot of Internet Music 3 columnsInternet Music themes will show off black and white photos, or images with dark items – laptops, cameras, engine/car parts etc, or scenic shots – blue sky, blue water; splashing, flashing marlin.

We’re thinking museums, hunters, boats, photographic suppliers, car parts, metal workers, outdoor sports people, sculptors … choose ‘internetmusic’ (two columns) and/or ‘internetmusic-3C’ (for the three column version) from Themeleon – our ‘hooked on barbecue music’ theme shifter.

September 3, 2008 on 5:41 am | In black, blue, cool colors, fixed width, gray, header image, light, three columns, white | No comments

Perhaps for business and/or life coaches, recruiters, charitable organisations, conference organisers, investment brokers, consultants, traders … choose the quirky ‘wooden-mannequin’ from Themeleon – our ‘woodworm freaks me out’ theme shifter.

Oldschool

September 2, 2008 on 12:41 pm | In black, blue, fixed width, gray, simple, three columns, white | No comments

screen shot of OldschoolOldschool is another fine theme from the house of Small Potato.

Visually uncomplicated, clean and tidy, just as a good copy book should be. That blue-black ink feeling brings back scary classroom memories – ink stained fingers, spitballs, passing notes, girly swots, and staring longingly out the window…

A great choice for writers, freelance journalists, e-news, online magazines, churches, teachers, educators, diarists, students, copy writers, memorabilia, clergy … choose ‘oldschool’ from Themeleon – our ‘the dog ate my homework’ theme shifter.

Fog

August 31, 2008 on 6:21 am | In background image, black, cool colors, dark, flexible width, gray, three columns | No comments

screen shot of FogSimple and clean, Fog is three column fluid theme by miloIIIIVII with an intelligent PHP menu by The undersigned.

Fog reminds us on one hand of those Sherlock Holmes-ian ghost-y stories – Hound of the Baskervilles and all that. On the other hand we can see reading poetry from these pages – compelling haiku, perhaps zen reflections.

Far across low mist
    Intermittently
    The lake
Lifts a snow-white sail
Gakoku

Choose ‘fog’ from Themeleon – our inscrutable theme shifter.

Kelabu (Gray)

We can see Kelabu (Gray) working for designers, rock bands, musicians, street artists, blacksmiths, car sales, electronics service, electricians, metal workers, panel beaters, engineers, armorers, military, historians, motorsports, cars, automotive, or spare parts companies. Choose ‘kelabu-gray’ from Themeleon – our grungy theme shifter.

Zip It

August 29, 2008 on 7:10 pm | In gray, light, three columns, two columns, white, yellow | No comments

screen shot of Zip ItZip It is another theme by the prolific designer, Small Potato.

The delicious buttery yellow reminds us of all those old National Geographics stacked up in attics and garages across the world. Tidy, but never bland, and with a clarity of the type usually reserved for better quality magzines. Zip It, we love it.

We’re thinking apairists, cartographers, conference organisers, geographers, magazine shops, photographers, travelers, wildlife artists … choose ‘zip-it’ from Themeleon – our zippy theme shifter.

Smashing Theme

August 28, 2008 on 10:50 am | In fixed width, gray, light, pastel, pink, three columns, warm colors, white | No comments

screen shot of Smashing ThemeSmashing Theme was designed by Elena Gafita from the DesignDisease team. Here’s what Elena had to say about her design when she talked to Smashing Magazine:

“Creating a WordPress Theme isn’t easy but I can’t call it yet a NASA Job. The theme I created for Smashing Magazine was a special task for me because I read this magazine every time they have something new so I wanted to give something back.

After I found out what Smashing Magazine team expects from this theme I got started by selecting the color palette. After this point I created the layout style and placed the background straps modular along with the layout areas. This choice was motivated by the fact that Smashing Magazine is a feed, a flux of information represented by the size and colors of the straps. Colors are — of course — inspired by the Smashing Magazine logo.

Every designer who creates a free theme must know the importance of the AdSense integration in the layout; therefore I’ve divided the content area in 3 sections (columns). Each of them for a specific AdSense unit (468 x 60), (180×150), (160×600).

In my themes I always try to make a clear visual separation between the Posting area and the Widget zone (2nd and the 3rd column). In this case I achieved this effect by creating a strong visual contrast: white for the written post (to ensure the optical silence for readers) and colorful/darker areas (active vibrant content motivates users to click on those surfaces) for the numerous categories, links etc.

Another fact which I care about is the space around the main content (posting area). The flux of information must breathe, so a 20/30px white space between information units is necessary. The space left between the different areas must be used as a module, repeating the spaces in key zones of the layout.

One of the most difficult tasks in designing a theme is to find a style for it. A unique style helps a blog to stand out from simplistic and minimalistic designs. I don’t have anything against minimalist style, but as a designer I feel I can express myself in a more colorful way.”

We love the gelato colors, and see them being used by cafés, confectioners, hospitality, ice-cream shops, interior designers, opticians, quilters, quirky, restaurants, sweet shops – choose ‘smashingtheme’ from Themeleon – our lickerty split theme shifter.

Blossom

August 23, 2008 on 10:57 am | In cool colors, fixed width, gray, neutral colors, two columns, white | No comments

screen shot of BlossomBlossom was designed by Sadish Bala of WP Themepark. Soft, mauve-y colours, a hibiscus flower adds a flourish to this clean and tidy theme. Sadish’s designs tend to work well across browsers and screen resolutions.

Blossom – well, it’s about Spring, growth, abundance, and beauty – suggesting a suitable design for travel related sites, or the more obvious nursery or horticultural world; however we can see the theme working for the health and healing sector as well. Choose ‘blossom’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.

Limit

August 15, 2008 on 3:28 am | In blue, custom header, fixed width, four columns, gray, header image, simple, three columns | No comments

screen shot of LimitLimit was designed by Jai Nischal Verma. It’s a simple and elegant, lightweight theme (which means it loads quickly, not that the theme is feeble in any way), and the sidebar allows for two columns – effectively a four column design. The rounded corners and reflection at the foot of the page reduce any impression of severity. Nice. The image of the horses can be replaced with one of yours as part of the customization.

Limit is likely to appeal to people wanting clear communication – community groups, conference organisers, charitable organisations, accountants, architects, engineers, lawyers, investment brokers, insurance. Choose ‘limit’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.

Kaushal’s use of dark grays, electric blue, and acid green make this a family of themes look quite vibrant, and the italic font really adds to the impression of action – things moving and changing.

The header image can be refined to suit your application, including using random images to really spark up your site. We can see this dynamic family of themes being used by educators, electricians, electronics service, environmentalists, gamers, magazine shops, outdoor sports people, photographers, street artists – for people not afraid of strong images and strong colour. We’re looking forward to white water rafting or mountain biking sites in particular.

WordPress Classic

August 1, 2008 on 5:38 am | In flexible width, gray, light, neutral colors, two columns, white | No comments

It's _the_ classicWordPress Classic is the original WordPress theme. It graced versions 1.2.x and prior. WordPress has come a long way since Dave Shea designed, and Matthew Mullenweg modified, this clean and elegant layout. Only the barest minimum has been defined – the useful variable width, two columns, and neutral gray colours. Of course, the colours can be refined to create your very own classic. We’re tempted by those Morris Minor colours – imagine (from 1948 to 1953) Platinum Grey, Romain Green, Black, Maroon, Mist Green, Gascoyne Grey, Thames Blue, Clarendon Grey, Empire Green, Birch Grey, and from later, Sage Green, Smokey Blue, Rose Taupe, Antelope, Pale Ivory, and Sandy Beige. Colours that defined a generation, a nation, an empire.

We see the WordPress Classic theme being used by people seeking a sophisticated and classic air – where their work can be complemented by neutral (but never bland) tones. Jewelers, book binders, designers, embroiderers, fine food purveyors, writers, therapists, lawyers, accountants… the list goes on. Choose ‘classic’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter – and see how to add a classic touch to your web communications – and as ever – adapting the design to your business cards, signage, and other communication forms is an option.
