M

September 13, 2008 on 10:25 am | In beige, fixed width, pastel, three columns, warm colors | No comments

screen shot of MHow James Bond-y is that? A theme named ‘M’ by Aruz. This theme has seven column spaces, and more features built in, with more options than a swiss army knife. To achieve the same functionality a more mainstream theme would require substantial customisation. With M, it’s ready done, right out of the box.

M’s adaptability and soft colours suggest a theme for conference organisers, community groups, charitable organisations, educators, teachers, philatelists, cartographers, scholars, not-for-profits, churches, hospice, healers, day spas, retreats, meditation, geologists … choose ‘m’ from Themeleon – our ‘also comes with a useful tool to take stones out of horse’s hooves’ theme shifter.

Elegant Brit

September 9, 2008 on 8:42 am | In background image, blue, cool colors, fixed width, green, orange, simple, two columns, warm colors, white | 2 comments

screen shot of Elegant Brit (blue) Elegant Brit is the the Sean Connery of the theme world. Urbane, classy, looking good in every thing – classic blue, classy green, and genteel orange. What? Can orange be genteel? Well, yes, when integrated with designs by Nick.

Nick’s an architecture major from North Carolina (USA). Not only is Nick into architectural design, but he also does graphical and web designs, plays the guitar, listens to music, plays tennis and golf, and snowboards in winter. Clearly, there’s no stopping this guy. He’s been designing web sites for a few years, using Photoshop, a text editor, and the Gimp.

screen shot of Elegant Brit (green)Enough about Nick already. Let’s take a look at the themes and how they could be used…

We can see Elegant Brit (blue) bring great for nautical applications, lawyers, accountants, counselors, therapists, tailors — anyone seeking the cool, sophisticated look. Vodka martini, stirred, not shaken.

Elegant Brit (green) suggests florists, landscapers, gardeners, organics, health food, pilgrims, botanists, wildlife artists — fresh, crisp green tones – for those seeking to recreate the calmness of ‘England’s green and pleasant land’ perhaps.

screen shot of Elegant Brit (orange)Elegant Brit (orange) — the amber colours and soaring shapes seem to suggest travel guides, geologists, not-for-profits, motorsports, cars, automotive, opticians, cartographers, geographers, engineers, architects, quilters, textile designers, interior designers – people looking for a finely crafted finish.

Nick’s basic layout doesn’t change, but the alternative colour options bring a very different feel and presence to the themes. Nice work, Nick. Choose ‘elegant-brit-b’ for Elegant Brit in blue, ‘elegant-brit-g’ for Elegant Brit in green, or ‘elegant-brit-o’ for Elegant Brit in orange from Themeleon – our licensed to thrill theme shifter.

Heady. Gentle. Internet Music

September 5, 2008 on 6:48 am | In fixed width, gray, red, three columns, two columns, warm colors, white | No comments

screen shot of Internet MusicInternet Music is designed by Luka Cvrk, and WordPressed by Ericulous from a style sheet by David Herreman. Another great WordPress collaboration.

We like the rust-red and grays colour combination, set off with the dash of cornflower blue. Makes us think of red cattle – paprika, and charcoal – hey – this is more about barbecue than music. You decide how you’ll use this theme. Of course the subheader can be customized – unless you have a special thing for Latin-ish. Well, no, we didn’t think so either.

screen shot of Internet Music 3 columnsInternet Music themes will show off black and white photos, or images with dark items – laptops, cameras, engine/car parts etc, or scenic shots – blue sky, blue water; splashing, flashing marlin.

We’re thinking museums, hunters, boats, photographic suppliers, car parts, metal workers, outdoor sports people, sculptors … choose ‘internetmusic’ (two columns) and/or ‘internetmusic-3C’ (for the three column version) from Themeleon – our ‘hooked on barbecue music’ theme shifter.

Smashing Theme

August 28, 2008 on 10:50 am | In fixed width, gray, light, pastel, pink, three columns, warm colors, white | No comments

screen shot of Smashing ThemeSmashing Theme was designed by Elena Gafita from the DesignDisease team. Here’s what Elena had to say about her design when she talked to Smashing Magazine:

“Creating a WordPress Theme isn’t easy but I can’t call it yet a NASA Job. The theme I created for Smashing Magazine was a special task for me because I read this magazine every time they have something new so I wanted to give something back.

After I found out what Smashing Magazine team expects from this theme I got started by selecting the color palette. After this point I created the layout style and placed the background straps modular along with the layout areas. This choice was motivated by the fact that Smashing Magazine is a feed, a flux of information represented by the size and colors of the straps. Colors are — of course — inspired by the Smashing Magazine logo.

Every designer who creates a free theme must know the importance of the AdSense integration in the layout; therefore I’ve divided the content area in 3 sections (columns). Each of them for a specific AdSense unit (468 x 60), (180×150), (160×600).

In my themes I always try to make a clear visual separation between the Posting area and the Widget zone (2nd and the 3rd column). In this case I achieved this effect by creating a strong visual contrast: white for the written post (to ensure the optical silence for readers) and colorful/darker areas (active vibrant content motivates users to click on those surfaces) for the numerous categories, links etc.

Another fact which I care about is the space around the main content (posting area). The flux of information must breathe, so a 20/30px white space between information units is necessary. The space left between the different areas must be used as a module, repeating the spaces in key zones of the layout.

One of the most difficult tasks in designing a theme is to find a style for it. A unique style helps a blog to stand out from simplistic and minimalistic designs. I don’t have anything against minimalist style, but as a designer I feel I can express myself in a more colorful way.”

We love the gelato colors, and see them being used by cafés, confectioners, hospitality, ice-cream shops, interior designers, opticians, quilters, quirky, restaurants, sweet shops – choose ‘smashingtheme’ from Themeleon – our lickerty split theme shifter.

Peaceful Rush

screen shot of Peaceful RushPeaceful Rush is designed by Small Potato of WPDesigner.com. The header image can be replaced with an image of your choice – or you can keep with the original image of the agapanthus lined road. It’s a lovely scene – perhaps from ‘My House in Umbria’?

Peaceful Rush reflects a comfortable outdoors-y idea – where someone has taken ‘that all important indoor-outdoor flow’ thing seriously. Rustic in a sophisticated and charming kind of way. That’s Small Potato for you. Xplosive Reloaded

August 20, 2008 on 9:27 am | In blue, fixed width, green, orange, red, three columns, warm colors | No comments

screen shot of Xplosive ReloadedXplosive Reloaded was designed by Jai Nischal Verma. It contains a very interesting and innovative concept – your visitors can pick the colors they want your information presented in – red (satin), gold (autumn), blue (aqua), or green (prairie). Try out the color-shifter for yourself – it’s a great idea. Xplosive Reloaded also takes a novel approach to prioritizing blog/news postings – only the latest is presented in full.

Xplosive Reloaded is likely to appeal to people for whom color is a priority – designers, furnishers, textile, interiors; or perhaps for people who just want to add some interactivity on their web site. Choose ‘xplosivereloaded’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.

jd-desert

August 16, 2008 on 4:34 am | In background image, brown, fixed width, three columns, two columns, warm colors | No comments

screen shot of jd-desert-3cAvailable in two or three columns, John Doe’s desert theme makes use of an image of desert. We can’t decide if it’s the Sahara, the Gobi, or the Sahel – no matter, the dunes look amazing. It is said that no-one crosses the desert and remains unchanged…

As with many of John’s themes, they are available as two and three columns – your choice – whatever works best for you.

screen shot of jd-desertApart from making us want to pull into the nearest caravanserai for a leisurely refreshment (or two), we can see traders, pilgrims, travelers, writers, rug merchants, geographers, cartographers, historians, environmentalists, travel agencies, photographers, spiritual or religious organisations, and scholars finding these themes appealing.

Choose ‘jd-desert-3c’ for the three-column version, or ‘jd-desert’ for the two-column version from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.

Red Marinee

August 7, 2008 on 11:33 am | In fixed width, gray, light, pastel, pink, two columns, warm colors | No comments

screen shot of Red MarineeRed Marinee, by Kaushal Sheth, is based on the original Green Marinee by Ian Main. The theme was ported to Textpattern by Thame – and then re-ported to WordPress by Kaushal Sheth. Phew!

Sensuous pinks and sooty blacks make this a great theme for candy-sweet moments. Nigella Lawson has assured us that, in India, pink is the new navy – and what Nigella says, goes. For restaurants, bubble tea shops, confectioners, baby clothes designers, baby supplies, florists, wedding planners – you make it work for you. Choose ‘redmarinee’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.
