Elegant Brit is the the Sean Connery of the theme world. Urbane, classy, looking good in every thing – classic blue, classy green, and genteel orange. What? Can orange be genteel? Well, yes, when integrated with designs by Nick.
Nick’s an architecture major from North Carolina (USA). Not only is Nick into architectural design, but he also does graphical and web designs, plays the guitar, listens to music, plays tennis and golf, and snowboards in winter. Clearly, there’s no stopping this guy. He’s been designing web sites for a few years, using Photoshop, a text editor, and the Gimp.
Enough about Nick already. Let’s take a look at the themes and how they could be used…
We can see Elegant Brit (blue) bring great for nautical applications, lawyers, accountants, counselors, therapists, tailors — anyone seeking the cool, sophisticated look. Vodka martini, stirred, not shaken.
Elegant Brit (green) suggests florists, landscapers, gardeners, organics, health food, pilgrims, botanists, wildlife artists — fresh, crisp green tones – for those seeking to recreate the calmness of ‘England’s green and pleasant land’ perhaps.
Elegant Brit (orange) — the amber colours and soaring shapes seem to suggest travel guides, geologists, not-for-profits, motorsports, cars, automotive, opticians, cartographers, geographers, engineers, architects, quilters, textile designers, interior designers – people looking for a finely crafted finish.
Nick’s basic layout doesn’t change, but the alternative colour options bring a very different feel and presence to the themes. Nice work, Nick. Choose ‘elegant-brit-b’ for Elegant Brit in blue, ‘elegant-brit-g’ for Elegant Brit in green, or ‘elegant-brit-o’ for Elegant Brit in orange from Themeleon – our licensed to thrill theme shifter.

Internet Music is designed by Luka Cvrk, and WordPressed by Ericulous from a style sheet by David Herreman. Another great WordPress collaboration.
We like the rust-red and grays colour combination, set off with the dash of cornflower blue. Makes us think of red cattle – paprika, and charcoal – hey – this is more about barbecue than music. You decide how you’ll use this theme. Of course the subheader can be customized – unless you have a special thing for Latin-ish. Well, no, we didn’t think so either.
Internet Music themes will show off black and white photos, or images with dark items – laptops, cameras, engine/car parts etc, or scenic shots – blue sky, blue water; splashing, flashing marlin.

Oldschool is another fine theme from the house of Small Potato.

Smashing Theme
August 28, 2008 on 10:50 am | In fixed width, gray, light, pastel, pink, three columns, warm colors, white | No comments
Smashing Theme was designed by Elena Gafita from the DesignDisease team. Here’s what Elena had to say about her design when she talked to Smashing Magazine:
“Creating a WordPress Theme isn’t easy but I can’t call it yet a NASA Job. The theme I created for Smashing Magazine was a special task for me because I read this magazine every time they have something new so I wanted to give something back.
After I found out what Smashing Magazine team expects from this theme I got started by selecting the color palette. After this point I created the layout style and placed the background straps modular along with the layout areas. This choice was motivated by the fact that Smashing Magazine is a feed, a flux of information represented by the size and colors of the straps. Colors are — of course — inspired by the Smashing Magazine logo.
Every designer who creates a free theme must know the importance of the AdSense integration in the layout; therefore I’ve divided the content area in 3 sections (columns). Each of them for a specific AdSense unit (468 x 60), (180×150), (160×600).
In my themes I always try to make a clear visual separation between the Posting area and the Widget zone (2nd and the 3rd column). In this case I achieved this effect by creating a strong visual contrast: white for the written post (to ensure the optical silence for readers) and colorful/darker areas (active vibrant content motivates users to click on those surfaces) for the numerous categories, links etc.
Another fact which I care about is the space around the main content (posting area). The flux of information must breathe, so a 20/30px white space between information units is necessary. The space left between the different areas must be used as a module, repeating the spaces in key zones of the layout.
One of the most difficult tasks in designing a theme is to find a style for it. A unique style helps a blog to stand out from simplistic and minimalistic designs. I don’t have anything against minimalist style, but as a designer I feel I can express myself in a more colorful way.”
We love the gelato colors, and see them being used by cafés, confectioners, hospitality, ice-cream shops, interior designers, opticians, quilters, quirky, restaurants, sweet shops – choose ‘smashingtheme’ from Themeleon – our lickerty split theme shifter.
Calm
August 27, 2008 on 9:53 am | In blue, cool colors, fixed width, header image, light, two columns, white | No comments
Calm was designed by Nick Barrett. The header image can be replaced with an image of your choice – or you can keep with the original image of the jellyfish. Sure, we’ll tidy up the credits to Nick and his site.

We’re thinking resorts, day spas, dive schools, boat rentals, chandlers, meditation, retreats – anything, anywhere, to ease back and r-e-l-a-x… choose ‘calm’ from Themeleon – our very relaxed theme shifter.
Blue Zinfandel
August 26, 2008 on 10:37 am | In black, blue, cool colors, fixed width, light, three columns, two columns, white | No comments
Blue Zinfandel is by Brian Gardner. A couple of choices are available – two columns (choose ‘blue-zinfandel-2c’ from the Themeleon) or three columns (choose ‘blue-zinfandel-3c’ from the Themeleon).
The Zinfandel family are presented with clean, timeless lines and a pleasant combination of serif and sans serif font consistent with a crisp, classical feel.
It is possible Blue Zinfandel is named for the grape commonly grown in California, originally the Croatian Crljenak Kaštelanski grape. Zinfandel makes excellent table grapes, wonderful red wine, however, in the USA, it is the white wine that is the biggest seller.
We believe the classical visuals will appeal to people with a need for crisp text presentation, and prompt and efficient load times – perhaps accountants, architects, copy writers, e-news, investment brokers, lawyers, not-for-profits, online magazines, pharmacists, or even oenologists.
A flask of wine, Themeleon, and thou.

Minimal Green is indeed minimal, however we think its elegant and clean lines has a wide appeal for people with powerful messages – people who don’t want the theme to stand in the way of the message. Choose ‘minimal-green’ from Themeleon – our chlorophyll-ed theme shifter.
WP-Andreas01
August 18, 2008 on 5:33 am | In cool colors, fixed width, header image, light, three columns, two columns, white | No comments
One of the ‘granddaddies’ of themes, WP-Andreas01 is a simple and clean template with a classic theme, designed by Andreas Viklund, a blogger, web designer and music producer from Jokkmokk, northern Sweden. Andreas writes – “This was the first website template I ever released, and it is still the single most popular of all my templates since the first version was released in July 2005. Since then, the template has been updated and improved several times. Beside the default 3-column layout, two different 2-column layouts (left or right sidebar) and a custom print stylesheet are included.” The header image can be replaced with one of your images.
WP-Andreas01 is a classic, and its quiet charm is likely to appeal to a complete spectrum of users. Choose ‘wp-andreas’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.
WP MagaPress
August 17, 2008 on 5:09 am | In fixed width, header image, light, neutral colors, two columns, white | No comments
Designed by Patrick Chia, WP MagaPress is based on WP-Andreas01, and retains the hallmark stability and robustness of that theme. The header image can be replaced with one of your images.
WP MagaPress has a quiet strength and we can see that appealing to bed and breakfasts, landscapers, gardeners, diarists, kennels, cattery, wildlife artists, small hotels – people where the understatement is more than statement enough.
Choose ‘wp-magapress’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.
jd-desert
August 16, 2008 on 4:34 am | In background image, brown, fixed width, three columns, two columns, warm colors | No comments
Available in two or three columns, John Doe’s desert theme makes use of an image of desert. We can’t decide if it’s the Sahara, the Gobi, or the Sahel – no matter, the dunes look amazing. It is said that no-one crosses the desert and remains unchanged…
As with many of John’s themes, they are available as two and three columns – your choice – whatever works best for you.
Apart from making us want to pull into the nearest caravanserai for a leisurely refreshment (or two), we can see traders, pilgrims, travelers, writers, rug merchants, geographers, cartographers, historians, environmentalists, travel agencies, photographers, spiritual or religious organisations, and scholars finding these themes appealing.
Choose ‘jd-desert-3c’ for the three-column version, or ‘jd-desert’ for the two-column version from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.
Limit
August 15, 2008 on 3:28 am | In blue, custom header, fixed width, four columns, gray, header image, simple, three columns | No comments
Limit was designed by Jai Nischal Verma. It’s a simple and elegant, lightweight theme (which means it loads quickly, not that the theme is feeble in any way), and the sidebar allows for two columns – effectively a four column design. The rounded corners and reflection at the foot of the page reduce any impression of severity. Nice. The image of the horses can be replaced with one of yours as part of the customization.
Limit is likely to appeal to people wanting clear communication – community groups, conference organisers, charitable organisations, accountants, architects, engineers, lawyers, investment brokers, insurance. Choose ‘limit’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.
Kukuspring
August 14, 2008 on 3:02 am | In brown, fixed width, light, neutral colors, two columns | No comments
Eric [Kukuthebird] Sim’s Kukuspring is part of a series inspired by the four seasons. Eric is a self-professed, ardent fan of fake-vector art, and this theme features sakura (plum) flowers, painstakingly drawn in Photoshop; combined with subtle gradients. He writes – “This theme portrays undying hope and passion. Hope springs eternal.” The theme was ported to WordPress by Grab a Theme.
Perhaps a theme for jewelers, therapists, florists, wedding planners, bridal outfitters, spiritualists, beauticians – for lovers of the elegant; the eternal believers in undying hope and passion. Choose ‘kukuspring’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.

Coffee Stained
August 12, 2008 on 1:24 am | In brown, fixed width, light, neutral colors, two columns | No comments
Camden Bucey’s Coffee Stained is based on the classic WordPress Default. Despite the coffee stain, the theme is clean and tidy – as might be expected from Default, and the muted colours work very nicely. Brings back those memories of the all-nighters…
Coffee Stained seems like a theme for illustrators, counselors, cartoonists, freelance journalists, security guards, therapists, contact centers, students, copy writers, creative agencies, cafés, hospitality, teachers – all those sleeplessly seeking inspiration from coffee. Choose ‘coffee-stained’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.
Screwdriver

“You need a screwdriver for all those bolts!” In keeping with its solid appearance, Screwdriver is a well constructed theme designed by ..::DeUCeD::... We can see this theme being used by blacksmiths, metal workers, panel beaters, engineers, heavy metal fans, steam engine buffs, armorers, submariners, perhaps even steampunk enthusiasts. Kindred souls of the metal aesthetic.
Choose ‘screwdriver’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.
Sandbox
August 10, 2008 on 12:06 am | In flexible width, light, simple, two columns, white | No comments
Sandbox? What’s Sandbox? Like everything WordPress, Sandbox is the work of a small team, Andy Skelton and Scott Allan Wallick. Here’s what they say: “The Sandbox is truly unique. It is a theme that aims to be anything and to be the best at being anything. It degrades beautifully. It embraces the best available practices in blog design.” OK, in short then, Sandbox is a theme that other people can customize.
Or leave it just as it is. Sandbox as is isn’t a theme for everyone, but it’s just great for people who appreciate the minimalist, content-is-king approach. Ideal for scientists, writers, zen aficionados, people concerned with the spiritual or religious, teachers – people focussed closely on honest, rich content, rather than the idle shim-sham of display. Choose ‘sandbox’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.
Fluid2
August 9, 2008 on 9:08 pm | In dark, flexible width, gray, green, header image, red, two columns | No comments
Welcome to the Fluid2 family of fine themes, released by Kaushal Sheth. Kaushal is based in Mumbai, India. He’s found time to work on the themes while undertaking a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in field of Electronics and Telecommunication from D.J.Sanghvi College of Engineering, at the University of Mumbai.
Fluid2 is based on Dave Reeder‘s fluidity template ‘for business or fun’. There’s a full range available, so choice and flexibility is the name of the game here. First up is the three column version, choose ‘fluid2’ from Themeleon.
Fluid2ls builds on the basic design, with a single sidebar located on the left side of the screen. Choose ‘fluid2ls’ from Themeleon.
Fluid2rs also uses the same design, however the single sidebar is located on the right side of the screen. Choose ‘fluid2rs’ from Themeleon, you know the drill – our happy theme shifter.
Kaushal’s use of dark grays, electric blue, and acid green make this a family of themes look quite vibrant, and the italic font really adds to the impression of action – things moving and changing.
The header image can be refined to suit your application, including using random images to really spark up your site. We can see this dynamic family of themes being used by educators, electricians, electronics service, environmentalists, gamers, magazine shops, outdoor sports people, photographers, street artists – for people not afraid of strong images and strong colour. We’re looking forward to white water rafting or mountain biking sites in particular.
FluidYellow
August 8, 2008 on 7:23 pm | In fixed width, gray, light, pastel, three columns, white, yellow | No comments
FluidYellow has been released by Romow Web Directory.
Soft yellows and golds, coupled with the use of gray text, and consistent rounded corners and indented paragraphs make this theme subtle without being bland. The use of the lacy floral designs in the header adds understated elegance and interest. For florists, landscapers, gardeners, organics, health food, cafés – anyone with a sunny disposition. Choose ‘fluidyellow’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.
Red Marinee
August 7, 2008 on 11:33 am | In fixed width, gray, light, pastel, pink, two columns, warm colors | No comments
Red Marinee, by Kaushal Sheth, is based on the original Green Marinee by Ian Main. The theme was ported to Textpattern by Thame – and then re-ported to WordPress by Kaushal Sheth. Phew!
Sensuous pinks and sooty blacks make this a great theme for candy-sweet moments. Nigella Lawson has assured us that, in India, pink is the new navy – and what Nigella says, goes. For restaurants, bubble tea shops, confectioners, baby clothes designers, baby supplies, florists, wedding planners – you make it work for you. Choose ‘redmarinee’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.
3c-Black-LetterHead
August 6, 2008 on 4:51 am | In black, custom header, dark, fixed width, header image, three columns | 4 comments
3c-Black-LetterHead is based on Robin Hastings‘ Letterhead, with CSS colors modified by Ulysses Ronquillo, and adapted by Hakan Aydin’s into a theme using a three column layout. It uses the default Kubrick theme as a base.
The lush black background makes this an ideal theme for showing off photographs – portfolios perhaps for a blacksmith, car sales, comic book shops, gamers, games shops, hot glass, illustrators, leadlighters, musicians, neon artist, rock bands, technologists – the list goes on. Anyone who has a need to show their images off in a bold style. Choose ‘3c-black-letterhead’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.
2colours
August 5, 2008 on 3:47 am | In dark, fixed width, red, three columns | No comments
The full name of this theme is 2coloursExtended 3.0 and it has been coded up by miloIIIIVII. It’s another approach on a magazine-like three column fixed theme with some custom painting and an intelligent PHP menu by The undersigned. Give the menu a try – it works rather well.
2colours is used here ‘straight out of the box’ and some of the footer content is including the standard Flickr feeds etc. This can be customized or removed for your web site – everything will play nicely on your web site. We think 2colours would be great for rock bands or musicians, freelance journalists, writers, street artists, creative agencies, e-news, online magazines, the quirky and the fascinating. Choose ‘2colours’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter.
01-Dragee
August 4, 2008 on 2:57 am | In blue, flexible width, header image, light, neutral colors, pastel, two columns | No comments
A dragée (pronounced dra-ZHAY) is a classy name for a sugar covered chocolate candy. You know, like ‘M&Ms’. In this instance, 01-Dragee is Julian jez Klewe’s rather sweet theme. According to his web profile, C. Julian jez Klewes is a 23 year old student from Germany. Living in Kempen, near by Düsseldorf, he studies International Business and Management Studies at Fontys in Venlo, the Netherlands. In the past years he published different kinds of work on the web and did freelance designing, as well as consulting and researching.
01-Dragee is used here ‘straight out of the box’ and some of the images are not always playing nicely with the text. They will play nicely on your web site. If you like the layout but want to use your own image (instead of the dragée) in the center that’s easy to change. We think 01-Dragee would be great for pharmacists, sweet shops, bed and breakfasts (B&B), small hotels, for people in the hospitality, medical, or education businesses – looking for crisp and cool concepts. Choose ‘01-dragee’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter – and see how sweet it is.
jd-nebula
August 3, 2008 on 2:42 am | In background image, dark, fixed width, purple, three columns, two columns | No comments
Available in two or three columns, John Doe’s galactic theme makes use of an image of the Horsehead nebula, possibly from Hubble. In 2000, some 5,000 students, teachers, and professional and amateur astronomers across the internet voted to select this object for the orbiting Hubble telescope to view.
From the constellation Orion to your web site, thanks to John’s themes. We loved the design and layout, in fact we customised a three-column version for Get Going Online.
Apart from our use, we can envisage the theme being ideal for astronomers (of course), astrologers, technologists, illustrators, cartoonists, comic book shops, writers… in fact, anyone reaching for the stars or, as the Maison d’Ailleurs offers, “science fiction, utopia and extraordinary journeys”. Choose ‘jd-nebula-3c’ for the three-column version, or ‘jd-nebula’ for the two-column version from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter – and begin your own extraordinary journey.
WordPress Default
August 2, 2008 on 2:35 am | In blue, custom header, fixed width, light, two columns, white | No comments
The default WordPress theme is based on the famous Kubrick – the theme designed and built by Michael Heilemann; the theme that launched 1,000 themes. Often themes based on Kubrick still maintain the distinctive hallmark – the lists use the double right quotes » as bullets.
The header can be edited so instead of having just the crisp nautical blue and white you can have colours (and graduated colours at that) to beat the band. The header can also be replaced with an image. Here’s one we prepared earlier – note how we used the signature » bullets. Seems almost an in-joke so we figured, sure, why not?
Kubrick is frequently used by people who really want to be clear – not quite ‘just the facts, ma’am’ because Kubrick’s graduated colours and rounded corners make for a more human approach – however the almost Scandinavian, IKEA-ish, no-nonsense design is great for conveying information. While Kubrick is the vanilla ice-cream of the web world, you can change the header and juice it up to suit. Conference organisers, community groups, charitable organisations … most any business where communicating written information is a priority. Choose ‘default’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter – and experience the cool crispness of Kubrick.
WordPress Classic
August 1, 2008 on 5:38 am | In flexible width, gray, light, neutral colors, two columns, white | No comments
WordPress Classic is the original WordPress theme. It graced versions 1.2.x and prior. WordPress has come a long way since Dave Shea designed, and Matthew Mullenweg modified, this clean and elegant layout. Only the barest minimum has been defined – the useful variable width, two columns, and neutral gray colours. Of course, the colours can be refined to create your very own classic. We’re tempted by those Morris Minor colours – imagine (from 1948 to 1953) Platinum Grey, Romain Green, Black, Maroon, Mist Green, Gascoyne Grey, Thames Blue, Clarendon Grey, Empire Green, Birch Grey, and from later, Sage Green, Smokey Blue, Rose Taupe, Antelope, Pale Ivory, and Sandy Beige. Colours that defined a generation, a nation, an empire.
We see the WordPress Classic theme being used by people seeking a sophisticated and classic air – where their work can be complemented by neutral (but never bland) tones. Jewelers, book binders, designers, embroiderers, fine food purveyors, writers, therapists, lawyers, accountants… the list goes on. Choose ‘classic’ from Themeleon – our happy theme shifter – and see how to add a classic touch to your web communications – and as ever – adapting the design to your business cards, signage, and other communication forms is an option.
Entries and comments feeds. Valid XHTML and CSS. ^Top^ Theme based on John Doe's beautiful jd-nebula-3c.
